We believe that this anonymous 19th century quotation expresses how special the continent of Africa is. The central ethos of Lalibela is to ensure that what visitors experience with us does justice to these sentiments. Lalibela's location in the Eastern Cape means it is not only malaria-free, but spans 5 ecosystems, resulting in a breath-taking diversity of flora and fauna. The three main aspects of any safari are the game-viewing, the accommodation and the food. At Lalibela we take special care to ensure that heartfelt service combines with these three "ingredients" to make your safari experience a memorable one. Lalibela now consists of 7,500 hectares (approximately 18,500 acres) and is home to the Big 5 (lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo & leopard). Lalibela is unique in the Eastern Cape in that we have no public roads running through our property. All of the animals, including the predators, are free-roaming throughout the entire reserve. We are very pleased to be able to announce that African wild dogs were released on 6 January 2006 (see news page for further information).
We currently have four lodges - Lentaba Lodge, Mark's Camp, Tree Tops and Idwala Lodge - all offering decor that is infused with the essence of Africa, as well as warm and friendly service and unforgettable game viewing. A 5th lodge, Makana's Lodge, is due to open in August this year. Lalibela brings you the charm of authentic Africa and is a perfect blend of the formal and informal. At Lalibela, food is true safari cuisine with an emphasis on local specialties, ranging from centuries-old recipes to exciting contemporary African dishes. REASONS TO VISIT LALIBELA GAME RESERVE There are good reasons to choose Lalibela Game Reserve for your safari when you visit South Africa. Excellent game viewing: Of the 6 vegetation types in South Africa, 5 occur naturally on Lalibela. Of these, the Valley Bushveld biome, which only occurs in the Eastern Cape, has the highest carrying capacity of game in South Africa. For this reason Lalibela is able to sustain a dense population of wildlife. Big5 sightings occur regularly and other game such as zebra, giraffe, antelope, hippo, cheetah etc are abundant. Location: The popularity of doing a safari in the Eastern Cape has grown and this is borne out by the fact that our region boasts a variety of safari products such as Addo Elephant National Park, Shamwari, Kwandwe, Gorah, Kariega and Amakhala.
Malaria-free: Game drives:
Lalibela now comprises 7,500 hectares ( 18,500 acres) of valley bushveld, savannah grassland, fynbos, riverine forest and acacia woodland. There are no public roads running through the property and all the animals, including the predators, roam freely throughout the entire reserve. With the increase in the size of our property, our carrying capacity has increased significantly to the extent that we have been able to bring in more lion (a male and female lion). In January 2006 we will be introducing another family herd of elephant. We expect the male and female lion to establish their own pride separate to our existing pride of lion. The family herd of elephant are likely to meet up with our resident herd from time to time, but the 2 herds of elephant will spend most of their time apart from each other. In addtion the family herd of elephant, we are also bringing in another 2 large mature bull elephants. We are also very pleased to be reintroducing African wild dog at Lalibela. These highly endangered mammals used to roam freely in the area before being hunted almost to extinction in the late eighteen and early nineteen hundreds. They are presently in a holding boma to get used to the area and will be released onto the reserve in early January. You get two game drives for each night that you stay at Lalibela: one in the late afternoon and one early the following morning.
